The African proverb says "It takes a village to raise a child"; but I believe that it also takes a child to raise a village because children who are cultivated into productive citizens are better equipped to positively contribute to their communities. When students struggle with traditional education models, they are often ill-prepared for life as independent adults. However, by using a community based learning approach, I believe students can help to improve the conditions of their environment as they gain the skills needed to thrive in an ever evolving global 3rd Millennium!
My vision is to see the classroom extend into the community.
Teachers are doing their best to prepare our youth for the future, but imagine how much more prepared children could be if we expanded their education into the world before it was time for them to navigate it on their own. In traditional first nation cultures, everyone in the village helps children to grow into self-sufficient adults. If we go beyond the scope of typical academic disciplines, we can further the growth and development of students as well as communities by providing opportunities for everyone to work together to solve real world problems.
